Recommendations: Brit Pop
Stone
Roses: s/t
Epic songs and droning guitars by Jon Squire along with the
vocals of Ian Brown merged indie rock and dance music into what
now is known as Brit Pop. This is the seminal recording, and
Oasis stole everything these guys ever did. Everything. Too
bad they never rose to the level of their groundbreaking debut.
Radiohead: The Bends, OK Computer
A merging of beautiful, absolutely massive guitars with delicate,
beautiful vocals defines The Bends, one of the important
recordings of the '90s. Many consider OK Computer better
as a more influential recording with its themes of technology
and Pink Floyd ambience, but I just prefer the songs on The
Bends. Both great recordings and essential.
The
La's: s/t
Lee Mavers, the leader of The La's, was an enigmatic genius.
"There She Goes", off of the debut, is one of the hookiest
guitar pop recordings ever recorded. Mavers was well versed
in the great pop song tradition of The Beatles and others.
It is too bad he imploded on himself as so many of the great
creative artists do.
Yes,
more will be added.
