Christmas Sounds: Sixty-Plus Years Of Holiday Recordings

by Michael Lynch

One of the traditions of the Christmas season for any music fan is hearing on the radio those classic holiday recordings we only ever hear a few weeks out of the year. Well, sure, you COULD play your copy of Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" in June, but wouldn't you feel rather funny about it?

Well, I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who...

Borrowed Time

by Gary Pig Gold

December the 8th found me relaxing by my stereo for the first time in much too long. With nothing to do and nowhere to go, I found myself switching the radio on, only to be bombarded by scratchy old Beatles tunes on nine stations out of ten. "Which one died now?" I immediately thought, pessimistically thinking. It was...

My Space

by Mike Bennett

My Space (myspace.com) is hot. So hot that Fox bought it. For those of you not familiar with My Space, it's an Internet friend network, a la Friendster. People put up profiles and pictures, they invite people to be friends, which leads to more connections and so on and so forth. The one thing that has separated My Space from similar networks is its emphasis on music.

My Space offers bands a chance to upload some songs on their page. Thus, it is a gigantic cafeteria for new music. Recently, as many of you may know, major artists have streamed entire new albums on My Space. This includes Neil Diamond and Beck, to give you an idea of how big...

The World is Round: Porn to Go!

by Alan Haber

I try to hold out and write this column just before deadline, because very often my best ideas come from news items or from surfing the net, and more than a few times I've found items I've wanted to write about and it was too late. Because timeliness is next to Godliness.

Well, God ought to be thrilled with this particular item, which I read about in the Washington Post Express, a publication that is given free to riders of the Metro system. Honestly, you can't pay enough for news like this: Porn is coming to your iPod.

Yes, porn is coming...

So Much Music, So Little Time

by Kevin Mathews

Did you know that progressive metal stalwarts Dream Theater are performing in Singapore in the New Year? When I mentioned this to someone, he remarked that he was too "old" for that kind of music - and he's 35! Now, let me get this right - how can anyone be too "old" for music that is largely based on the progressive rock movement of the 70s? If anything, he's too young! Which got me thinking about how rock music and age always seems to be unnaturally linked. And why should it be? After half a century of rock music, there is really no reason for anyone to express these sentiments with the cycles that music movements...

Further Observations From a Jangly Musical Fan

by Eric Sorensen

Those of us who are music enthusiasts have all experienced this frustration: you hear a great song on the radio, but you don't hear the DJ tell the radio listeners what the name of the song is or who the artist is. Unless you hear the song again, you're just plain out of luck! "Run for home; Run as fast as I can; Wo-oh running man; Running for home." I heard these chorus lyrics once, in December 1979, when I turned on the car radio, heard a very cool song … and then never heard the name of the artist or the song. I concluded that the name of the song was "Running Man" and I thought that the artist was Air Supply … but I was never able to make a match. The song became an unfulfilled musical quest.

Twenty-six years later, I...
