A Bunch of Musings
by Mike Bennett
Well, I scampered over to Tower Records
to get my hands on a copy of the newest box set from Rhino
Records, Children Of Nuggets. This set takes a look
at bands that, in the opinion of Alec Palao and the other
compilers, followed in the footsteps of the great bands of
the 60s garage and psychedelic era. Of course, I had
seen the track list months before, and had already made up
my mind that I had to buy it.
So why am I not as blown away by this as I was by the previous
two Nuggets box sets? It's not that this isn't a bevy
of enjoyable songs. It's just that something seemed to be
missing. Currently, there are two things that I'm thinking
that are giving me this vibe. First, unlike the two prior
box sets, this set covers an era where I was around. I not
only own a bit over one-third...

The Michael Carpenter
Interview, Part II
by Mike Bennett

In part one of my interview with Michael
Carpenter in the last issue of Fufkin, I focused on his swell
new project with Hitchcock's Regret singer Mark Moldre, The
Supahip. Their debut platter Seize the World (Not Lame)
is a wonderfully relaxed pop-rock album that Michael's fans
should enjoy and, I hope, may win him some new fans. In part
two of this interview, I opened things up to ask Michael about
the music business and the current climate for music, what
he's listening to, the current status of his solo career and
his songwriting. As with part one, Michael's intelligence
and honesty shine through. This interview

The World is Round:
Customer Disservice, Part Three

by Alan Haber
I was going to write this month about the
online music services such as Napster and Rhapsody, and what
is so damn good about them, when the following incident took
place. It so bothered me that I felt compelled to write about
it.
I was in a wireless phone store, returning
a phone, just minding my own business, when I came within
earshot of a woman who was speaking to someone from the phone
company's national call center about a predicament that she
and many thousands of others were deep within, that being
the collective devastation of the recent Hurricanes Rita and
Katrina.
The woman had been relocated, as so...

So Much Music, So
Little Time

by Kevin Mathews
The absolute worst thing about putting this
column together is finding the time to do it. No kidding!
And the music keeps pouring in like a flood
so much of
it! You should see my worktable at home; it is basically CDs
piling on either side of my computer monitor. Not that I am
complaining about receiving free CDs - far from it. I guess
sometimes I feel a little guilty about not being able to get
the reviews done on time or at all.
So there will be times when I receive gentle reminders...

Further Observations From
a Jangly Musical Fan
by Eric Sorensen

Our summer drought weather became so predictable
that it extended itself into the first days of Autumn without
any indication that the seasons had changed. Thankfully, the
long hot summer had no impact on our music-related endeavors.
On successive September weekends, we were able to enjoy some
terrific live music. We made the long drive down to Abingdon,
Virginia to see our pal, Buddy Woodward, perform in "Man
Of Constant Sorrow: The Story of the Stanley Brothers"
at the Barter Theater. Buddy portrayed several characters
in this fast-moving musical, and he excelled in his primary
role as a member of the Clinch Mountain Boys - providing lead
guitar, mandolin...
