Christmas Sounds: Sixty-Plus Years Of Holiday Recordings

One of the traditions of the Christmas season for any music fan is hearing on the radio those classic holiday recordings we only ever hear a few weeks out of the year. Well, sure, you COULD play your copy of Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" in June, but wouldn't you feel rather funny about it?

Well, I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who, when hearing some of those classics every December, tends to wonder just how far back in time these records date. Exactly what year did the Chipmunks first bite us? Just what year was it when Andy Williams was telling us about that most wonderful time? What year did those dogs make their recording debut?

I've always wanted to find an article that listed all the memorable Christmas tunes, separated by year, so I could see not only their time of original release, but also see what other Yuletide ditties originate from the same year. Unable to find one, I have constructed my own.

This is by no means a complete list. I cut it off at 1992, partially because as far as I'm concerned there have been no important holiday records since then (don't look for Celine Dingdong or Rosie O'Donnell's releases on here), and partially because anything since then is too new to be classic. I have limited this to either the most popular songs (whether I like them or not, as there are several songs on this list I could happily go the season without hearing) and the most notable obscurities, and I pretty much left off any obscurities past the 1960s.

Enjoy. Even if you don't care about the exact years, you can always use this as a checklist for the mix tape for your Christmas party.
