Girl
Don't Tell Me It's The End of the Summer
It's
Labor Day, summer is over and I have "Girl Don't Tell
Me" in repeat mode to get me in the mood here. I always
wondered if there actually was a girl who promised she would
write Brian and then she didn't. Wherever you are, if indeed
you forgot, thanks.
As
I watch Meet The Press and listen to the Iraq attack debate, it
really hit me that it has been a year since 9/11. Sure, it's been rehashed
over and over, but as some say; "...never forget." I don't know
how we could, but music is certainly a great way to celebrate our lives.
In
that spirit, many of you have noticed that we are writing about different
genres of music. I think it's important, because, in my experience, the
truly enlightened listener can appreciate quality in anything musical.
Melody, harmony, songs, recordings and performances can be moving in any
genre. Certainly, I love The Beatles, and it all starts there for me,
but a Rufus Thomas vocal, a John Coltrane solo, a Hank Williams refrain,
a Charles Mingus composition or a Little Walter harp turnaround all have
their space in the broad pantheon of what is "good". I often
wonder if certain stars have good taste in music. For example, does Eminem
have the encyclopedic knowledge of black music like his mentor, Dr. Dre?
I know nothing about hip hop, but I am hesitant to dismiss it when there
are visionaries like Dre in the genre. A great magazine covering hip-hop,
soul and black music in a MOJO-like way is the UK publication
Big Daddy. Forget Vibe, BD is where it's at. I highly
recommend it to the soul and black music aficionados out there. And how
about that new Solomon Burke CD...wow.
On
a humorous note, I really invoked the ire of Oasis fans with last month's
column. Heh...I'm just kidding around...give me a little bit of leeway
for the price of those tickets.
In
the totally self-involved, use the column as a soapbox department, it
looks like Guided by Voices and Superdrag will be playing in Fort Lauderdale
on 10/22. This is the first decent show that has come down here in a long,
long, long time. Not that what I say will make any difference, but ...please....don't
cancel on 10/21. As a matter of fact, wherever GbV's management is out
there, I'll add $100 onto that GbV bar tab limit if you make the date.
It's not much, but please...I need to see some fu...n' rock 'n roll.
See
you next month...
