The
definition of "while" denotes a period of time,
usually short. The name of this band is particularly apropos
where the recording is all about the little things, the details
that can pass in a split second that really are the difference
between something making an impression and not. Most of the
songs here would sound good on a mix tape with The Jayhawks,
Nick Drake, Bryndle, Jackson Browne, The Youngbloods and Pernice
Brothers.
The
first track, "Lonely River," has a Jayhawks Hollywood
Town Hall vibe. "Lonesome Reply" juxtaposes
Mary and images of church and cathedrals in a subtle, beautiful
Nick Drake-like soundscape. "Waiting for You" reminds
me of Jackson Browne at his finest. (Please, no Jackson Browne
cracks; he had some fine moments.) The guitar solo
on "Waiting for You" is consistent with the great
guitar playing on this CD. For me, this is where I get the
Pernice Brothers comparisons. Like the phenomenal Peyton Pinkerton,
the unidentified guitar player on this recording creates many
moods and sounds with his instrument.
The
grandiose chorus of "Goodbye" is a powerful moment.
"Colors of the Year" has a unique, tasteful use
of guitar arpeggios in the chorus with swells coming out of
the chorus that really make the song. The guitar parts on
"Colors
" are the finest moments on a CD filled
with excellent snippets of time sewn together by an obviously
smart and talented band.
Attention
to detail creates a special whole. This is a high quality
recording by a band who gets the little things right. That
rarely happens. Highly Recommended.
