Best Music of 2004

1. Eugene Edwards - My Favorite Revolution (Tallboy)

He sings 'em, he writes 'em and he puts 'em across like he means it. Pure pop has never sounded so good. Not this year, anyway.

2. Lolas - Something You Oughta Know (JAM)

Remember power pop? This is it, the real deal.

3. Bronco Bullfrog - Oak Apple Day (Rock Indiana)

Britpop done right, kinda bucolic, sorta Who-like, always melodically stimulating.

4. David Grahame - DT and the Disagreeables (Dog Turner)

The mercurial Mr. Grahame strikes again, doling out a bunch of sweet pop tunes that are impossible to shake.

5. Cloud Eleven - Terrestrial Ballet (West Coast/JAM)

It's a comp of sorts, but it's also the best set of songs that pop-psych master Rick Gallego has ever put to tape

6. Tommy Keene - Drowning: A Tommy Keene Miscellany (Not Lame)

Another comp of rare and unreleased songs, with the high quality level that we've come to expect from this guitar whiz/pop legend.

7. Cliff Hillis - Better Living Through Compression (Tallboy)

Pure pop for mature people? Could be. Whatever you wanna call it, it's great.

8. Jamie Hoover and Bill Lloyd - Paparazzi (Paisley Pop)

When two dyed-in-the-wool popheads get together, this is the result...pure melodic bliss, track after track.

9. Seth Swirsky - Instant Pleasure (no label)

He's written songs for Taylor Dayne (yikes!) and with Eric Carmen, and now he steps out solo with a beautiful, understated honey of a pop record.

10. John Hoskinson - Miscellaneous Heathen (Kaopeoths)

Singer/songwriter stuff done the right way, with many melodic twists and turns and a healthy dose of pop smarts.
